Top 10 Things I Learned from AVP
Hello Monks. Rick here again with the top 10! This time I tackle Alien vs. Predator Requiem. Sure it wasn’t Aliens, but at least it wasn’t that first AvP movie. There were a few things to learn from this movie. And at least one very good one. Here it is, enjoy.
1. The sewer makes great living quarters for the homeless and a superb breeding ground for the alien infestation.
2. The hospital is a great place to give birth and a superb breeding ground for the alien infestation.
3. A hunting trip with your boy is all fun and games, just never, under any circumstances check out that strange object that fell from the sky. Doing so only leads to a horrible death.
4. When you pick up your dead Predator comrade from the Alien/Predator show down. Inspect the body for infection before allowing it on board.
5. There may not be any honor in killing the cop who stumbled upon you as you clean up someone else’s mess. But it sure is fun skinning him.
6. Panicking in the middle of an alien hive achieves only one thing. Getting yourself killed.
7. Corporeal Hicks learned the lessons of his forefathers, why send down a platoon of troops to die trying to cleanse out the Alien infestation when you can do all the work by nuking it from orbit.
8. Always listen to the person with the Military background. It could mean the difference between surviving and death by nuclear cleansing. (see number ![]()
9. As much as you like the hot blonde with the douche bag boyfriend, it only leads to trouble, a kick to the stomach and your keys getting dumped in the alien infested sewer.
10. The Predators are a clean society; their blue goo can get rid of anything, from bodies to that gravy stain in your suit jacket.
“The Secret’s” Own Cloverfield
What is Cloverfield?
Cloverfield is a new giant monster movie coming out by JJ Abrams. It’s a movie with many secrets. Enormous efforts were made to keep the monsters look, a secret. When the first teaser trailer came out Abrams didn’t even name the movie. The audience was left guessing. He kept it a secret!
Still More Secrets
This article isn’t about Cloverfield the movie. It’s about another movie, a DVD movie called “The Secret”. This movie also has a huge gigantic monster of a secret. It’s own Cloverfield, if you will. Rest assured casual readers and true subscribers I’m going to give you a glimpse at “The Secret’s” own Cloverfield.
But, Wait! A Word of Warning
Sometimes mysteries are best left unsolved because the imaginary explanation behind the ‘mystery’ is often more powerful than the real ‘explanation’. It’s often more fun to believe there really is a Loch Ness monster underneath murky waters. So if you don’t want to be told that Santa Claus does not exist stop reading. Or if you’re the kind of person that loves to know how magic tricks are done then read on.
What’s “The Secret” about?
Want more spice in your life? Money? Love? Success? By following “The Secret” you can easily get everything you dream of. Literally speaking by using “The Law of Attraction”.
What is The Law of Attraction?
In a nutshell, “The Law of Attraction” insists that your feelings and thoughts are powerful and can attract real events into your life. Anything from the workings of the cosmos to interactions among individuals in their physical, emotional and professional affairs are controlled by our thoughts.
Basically all you have to do is believe and I mean believe intensely on what you want to attract into your life and the universe will bow down to your will. You can even cure life threatening ailments by just believing.
What happens if you don’t get what you believed in?
Well, according to the secret, you didn’t believe enough. It’s entirely your fault. “The Law of Attaction” is off the hook.
Finally Cloverfield Revealed
If you haven’t guessed by now. Ok, here it is. The Gigantic Monster Cloverfield secret is… it’s all bunk, BS, a smelly lie. That’s right it’s all a sham. Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Larry King, they’re all suckers.
Ok I take back what I said about Larry King
Despite the DVD selling at a tremendous pace and gaining worldwide attention and reaching the New York Times Best-Seller List there has been an avalanche of criticism towards the “The Secret” for good reason.
According to Wikipedia, Larry King rightly pointed out that if the Universe manifests abundance at a mere thought why is there so much poverty, starvation and death?
There is no scientific basis for “The Secret” claims. All evidence is anecdotal and subjective and highly susceptible to misinterpretations.
We also live in a country that allows for people to overcome adversity, which would allow a impoverished homeless man to attain the American dream. This would not be the case for much of the world.
It has been criticized by Time, The Guardian, Slate, Newsweek, the Chicago reader the Los Angeles Times, the Dayton Daily News.
You know it’s bad when its own stars criticize the movie
Even ‘The Secret’s own interviewees on the DVD claim they were taken out of context and they didn’t agree with the “The Secret” main premise. Here is an excerpt from one of the interviewees themselves from the Community of Excellence.
You Can’t Escape
Mark states how I truly feel about the whole thing. I believe in laser focusing on your goal through whatever means, be it visualizations, goal setting and most importantly actions.
Of course some things take patience, making a non-action or not making a move until the most opportune moment, but for the most part it takes action to achieve your goal.
When focusing on how to get to your goal ideas eventually come to mind. But, it’s up to you to take the heartfelt actions to achieve them. There’s no way around this fact. It’s in the 90% perspiration not the 10% of inspiration. You must roll up your sleeves, put on your magic armor, brave the dark realms on your path and slay the dragons to reach the golden treasure. No one will do it for you.
Epilogue
Who knows how Cloverfield the movie will do when it’s released to the public. Hopefully it won’t be ignored like an old dust collector sitting on a shelf for years. Just like I hope “The Secret” Cloverfield won’t be ignored either. Remember folks it’s ok to visualize, meditate, do your mantras and its even good, but ultimately accomplishing your dreams is in your actions.

Top 10 Things I Learned from ‘The Last Starfighter’
Hi everyone, I’m Rick, Marvin’s little brother. He asked me to come up with a top ten this week and after some thought I wanted to go with a long time favorite of mine, The Last Starfighter. I hope you enjoy it. Funny doesn’t come easily. Being a timeless tale of intergalactic heroism, I pondered what lessons there are to learn from the movie, with no further ado, our weekly top 10.
1. Don’t worry about everyone asking you to take care of everything they are too lazy to do themselves. You’ll eventually leave all those jerks behind to save the universe.
2. Dealing with your girlfriend, hard. Being the last star fighter against the Kodan armada, less hard.
3. There are no speed limits on flying cars.
4. Video games can save the galaxy and is a great training tool.
5. The little things matter, even a high score.
6. Never sell yourself short, if you think that your just a kid from a trailer park, then that is all your ever be.
7. Finding the hero can be a profitable business.
8. Find something to fight for, for example, your family and your girlfriend. Who is back home getting it on with your Beta Unit.
9. If you are the one ship against the armada, you can hide out in asteroid that isn’t considered a strategic blind spot.
10. The Enemy’s over confidence always leads them to keep their vulnerable weak spot exposed to attack.
Follow the Right Steps to Reach Your Goal
“You’re 5 foot nothin’, 100 and nothin’, and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best college football players in the land for 2 years. And you’re gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this life, you don’t have to prove nothin’ to nobody but yourself. Am I making myself clear?” –Fortune, Rudy
In my Mistakes Dreamers Make article, the second mistake people often make is they don’t exactly know the right way to get to where they want to be. Some people believe the only way to be a successful performer is being the American Idol. They don’t know that American Idol is just one audition out of thousands they could potentially try out for.
He didn’t exactly know how to do it. One of the keys of his success is Father Cavanaugh told him he could admit himself into Holy Cross and enter Norte Dame as a transfer student. To which he did. Had Rudy not been told this he probably never would have made it.
Dreamers often get stuck because they focus on their obstacles. Focus on your goals. Figure out the right steps to get to where you want to be and follow each step one by one.
Rudy had bad grades; he was small for a football player and didn’t really have all that much athletic skill. But, he knew the steps he needed to take in order to accomplish his goals. He had to get good grades in Holy Cross, he had to transfer to Norte Dame, he had to make the tryouts and finally he had the shot at coming onto the field and playing football.
Productivity Time Wasters
“…in order to not waste any time I wasn’t hanging up the phone in-between calls. I realized that by not hanging up the phone I gained about eight minutes a day. I also wasn’t drinking any water so I didn’t waste time having to go to the bathroom…” – Chris Gardner, The Pursuit of Happyness
What gets in the way of being productive? Increasing productivity is something each of us wants to do, something that is expected of us and something that we are judged on. It is obviously important to increase our own productivity and to do that we must avoid productivity time wasters.
In the movie ‘The Pursuit of Happyness‘, Chris Gardner put off time wasters such as not hanging up the phone, water break and going to the bathroom. He had to do in six hours what his competitors did in nine.
We hopefully won’t have to go to Chris Gardner’s extent. As I surfed the net I came across a productivity post on Goals to Action. On it he listed five common productivity killers. Listed below is a basic summary of the post.
Productivity Killer #1 – Wasting Time
Wasting time with unnecessary activities
Productivity Killer #2 – Over-Committing Your Time
Saying Yes to too many projects
Productivity Killer #3 – An Open Door
Being too available to your co-workers
Productivity Killer #4 – Avoiding The Hard Things
Pushing off a tougher parts of a project because they are difficult.
Productivity Killer #5 – Lack Of Sleep
Being too tired to work or not getting enough rest
I would only add, Working Hard versus Working Smart as a productivity killer. Sometimes people will keep doing the same thing over and over because that’s the only way they know how to do it. We have to be constantly learning how to do things better, smarter, and more efficiently.

The Pursuit of Motivation

Lately I’ve noticed numerous postings regarding ways to motivate oneself. There’s apathy among many people. And I see many people answer these posts by advising to write down how they want to see their lives. I’ve always felt, that’s not good enough.
A movie/book that really displays intense desire and motivation is ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’. Here is, Chris Gardner, a man with a child who became homeless on the San Francisco streets. Because of his situation he was highly motivated. So much so that his determination and resourcefulness
Chris’s actions in the movie/book demonstrate intense motivation. Sometimes you really have to feel something is at stake. Maybe it’s the lives of your family or the thought of being homeless. If you don’t have that, it’s easy to be complacent.
How do you guys motivate yourselves? Can you think of good examples of someone who had to dig deep to motivate himself or herself in order to accomplish a specific task? Please share.
